Finding Out if Your Body is Over Acidified
If you think you could be suffering from acidosis, you are not alone. Many people have an imbalance in their acid-base metabolism. This is because many people eat foods and drink fluids which are too acidic. This is clear when you consider that a glass of cola has a pH of 2.5, which is very acidic, in comparison a glass of tap water has a pH of about 7, which is what we would classify as neutral. However, there are many foods that can upset your internal balance. Animal proteins such as meat or fish, most dairy products, all of the pastry products we enjoy, noodles, sweets, coffee, alcohol, sodas, artificial seasonings and preservatives, as well as many more products, can contribute to an over-acidification of the body.
At the same time, acids are also created inside the body, as waste products of our metabolism. So, it is quite normal for the body to form acids and it happens all the time, even with an alkaline diet. It happens during the metabolism of cells, when uric acid is being formed, which then gets excreted through the kidneys into the bladder. Acid waste products are also made as part of the energy generation of cells. Also, when something ferments in the intestine, further acids are formed. However, the body has several mechanisms which it uses to break down these waste products.
Firstly, acidic gases are carried away and excreted through breath and blood, secondly, acids are released in sweat, and thirdly, uric acid is excreted through the kidneys. However, if the body needs to get rid of too much acid and does not do so properly, the lymph system becomes acidic and by-products are deposited in the tissue. By-products are neutralized acids. Interestingly, the places where our bodies store these by-products is different for all of us, although it may be hereditary. For some it is kept in the veins, for some it’s their joints and for others, it’s in the abdomen.
pH Values and Blood
The body strives to keep the blood at a constant pH value of around 7.3, a level which is very slightly alkaline. However, if the acidity level is too high, it could result in hyperacidity of the lymph system and the tissue. Even if this does occur the blood always remains slightly alkaline, as this is vital for a healthy functioning body. If the body is strongly hyper-acidic, the blood may begin to turn slightly more alkaline to counteract these effects. Somewhat surprisingly, pH values of around 7.5 have already been measured in the blood! In such cases, the whole acid-base metabolism is in disorder.
To de-acidify itself, the body begins to use natural barriers. Also known as buffers, these can bind acids so they are easier to remove or to be excreted along with other bodily fluids. The buffers used are alkaline minerals, such as those stored in bones and hair. Hyperacidity can cause the body to fall back on these mineral stores frequently, thus whittling away at resources which would otherwise be used for supplying hair and bones. The body simply draws the necessary minerals from teeth, bones, organs, the scalp, or from the blood vessels, in order to bind the excess of acids and remove them quickly.
The body must move forward to reduce acid buildup and keep the blood slightly alkaline, because otherwise, we could die very quickly. This means our systems are left vulnerable to new health problems and the symptoms of different diseases can start to arise.
The list of complaints and diseases associated with hyperacidity is alarming, it can cause tooth decay, accelerate hair loss, and cause fingernails to become more brittle. More worryingly, some serious diseases can also emerge, such as arteriosclerosis, rheumatism, gout, kidney stones, allergies, osteoporosis and many more. In some people, hyperacidity can also promote weight gain, because in order for acids to be excreted from blood and organs, the body builds up new fat cells into which it then stores acids and by-products. This ensures they are kept safe and don’t pollute our organs!
However, the body is a very complex system. When over-acidification is an issue, the problem is twofold. First, sufficient nutrients cannot be transported into our cells, and second, waste products cannot be broken down efficiently. On a cellular level, this could swiftly become a disaster. Indeed, if the condition persists, it’s possible that over acidified people could suffer diseases which they wouldn’t have to fight if their lymph system was alkaline!
The lymphatic system carries a clear fluid called lymph throughout your body and it plays a key role in fighting bacteria and infection. When acidity levels are high, it swells up and turns sluggish, like a gel. If you are over-acidified and this system suffers, over a period of time it can lead to more serious consequences.
Diseases and Acid Environment
Some diseases only ever appear in an acid environment, and it is even one of the main prerequisites for cancer. After he made this astonishing discovery in 1931, the biochemist Dr Otto Heinrich Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Of course, no one is able to promise categorically that alkaline ionized water heals, improves, or prevents diseases. If you get sick, then it is always sensible to visit the doctor. However, by drinking alkaline water you can certainly help and support your own body. This will encourage the lymphatic fluid to remain alkaline, assist in the decomposition of acidic waste products and aid the progression of nutrients on their way into cells. When you are offered a way of helping your body to regenerate itself, to rid itself of toxins and make you feel better into the bargain, it’s certainly worth a try.
Begin by flooding your system with alkaline water for a few weeks and observing the effects. By flooding we mean not just one daily glass, but up to 30 or 40 ml per kilo of body weight. That means a man weighing 100kg should drink 4 litres of alkaline water each day - no cola, no orange juice and no other soft beverages.
Is Your Lymphatic System Over-Acidified?
You can measure the pH of your saliva to establish whether your lymph is over-acidified or not. It is recommended that you do this in the morning immediately after getting up, before brushing your teeth, before having anything to drink and before eating breakfast. For the most reliable results, you should aim to collect saliva three times. Do this by spitting into the sink, then measure the pH of your fourth saliva sample. Do this inside your mouth by putting in a pH test strip, which you can buy from the pharmacy. After a few seconds remove it and compare the discolouration of the strip with the images on the packaging from the test strip manufacturer. If your saliva has a pH of between 6 and 7, you are slightly over-acidified and if the pH is below 6, you are chronically over-acidified. The normal value of saliva should be 7.2, assuming that nothing has been eaten or drunk beforehand.
It is therefore important, both in terms of what you eat and what you drink, to pay careful attention to your diet. Assuming it is consumed in sufficient quantities, alkaline water is important because it provides a counterpart to acids and can compensate for their detrimental effects. Bear in mind that for one glass of cola, you’ll need to drink 32 glasses of alkaline water. Therefore, it is advisable to make specific changes your lifestyle, one of which should be that you drink more than anything else. Moreover, it is also important to consider the quality, because different sources can be markedly diverse. Read more about this in our article entitled: Is all Water the Same?
It should be noted that there are some good acidifiers, not everything that makes you acidic is also unhealthy. Foodstuffs like nuts and pulses form acids, but they are very healthy. Other good acidifiers include whole grain cereals, corn, nuts, oil seeds, tofu, vegan protein powders such as pea protein, and beverages such as green tea or almond milk. Natural products should be as organic as possible, which ensures you can avoid pesticides. A vegetable diet rich in raw food certainly forms a good nutritional basis, but alkaline water can definitely complement this health-conscious approach.
